Practical tips: Cultivating sensing in leadership

Writer: Cecile JenkinsCecile Jenkins

If sensing is a skill, can we develop it? Absolutely. While some people seem naturally more intuitive, everyone can strengthen their ability to sense and integrate it into their leadership style.

When we develop our ability to sense into a decision, a meeting of others or a situation, we don’t just become better decision-makers—we become leaders who listen deeply, act wisely, and create stronger, more resilient teams. 🧠

We know that balancing logic and intuition leads to more adaptive leadership. But sensing isn’t just about instinct—it’s about tuning into subtle cues that logic alone might overlook. When leaders develop this skill, they navigate uncertainty with clarity and create psychological safety for their teams.

So, how can you practically improve your ability to sense?

Before making a big decision, take a moment of stillness. What do you feel in your body? Openness? Tension? That internal response can offer valuable insights before you act.

👂 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆

Your nervous system picks up on patterns before your mind processes them. If something feels off, don’t dismiss it. Pause before acting—there’s wisdom in that discomfort.

What emotional state are you transmitting to your team? Your presence shapes the energy of a room. Notice what your team is mirroring back—are they tense, hesitant, or at ease? Adjust your own state accordingly.

Trust your intuition, but don’t stop there. Validate it with rational thinking, evidence, or feedback. The key is flexibility—some situations call for more instinct, others for more analysis. Learn when to lean into each.

⏸️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁 ‘𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱’

When something doesn’t feel quite right, hold off. Take a breath. Pause. Instead of pushing forward blindly, give yourself time to sense what’s missing. Often, clarity comes with space.

🎯 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴

Sensing isn’t about abandoning logic—it’s about integrating awareness into your decision-making. The best leaders don’t rush. They listen, observe, and trust their ability to read the room, the data, and themselves.

In my next post, I’ll talk about the deeper meaning of balancing thinking with sensing in our lives. Stay tuned!
